FAFSA Completion is Essential (Even if you don't think you qualify!)

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the single most important financial step for all seniors.

  • Institutional Scholarship Requirement: It is critical to complete the FAFSA even if you do not think you will qualify for federal aid. Many colleges and universities require a completed FAFSA before they will award institutional scholarships (money coming directly from the college). Without the FAFSA on file, your student could miss out on significant aid.

  • Action Step: Please ensure your FAFSA is completed and submitted to every college your student is applying to.

Student Services News: Conflict Resolution Skills

The Student Services focus for this week is Conflict Resolution Skills: Healthy ways to solve disagreements.

Conflict is a natural part of life and relationships. Learning how to manage and resolve disagreements constructively is one of the most essential life skills your student can develop. It leads to stronger friendships, better communication, and a less stressful environment.

Four Skills for Healthy Conflict Resolution
Encourage your student to practice these simple steps when a disagreement arises:

  • 1. Take a Pause Button (Stay Calm): The most crucial first step is to avoid reacting instantly. When emotions are high, take three deep breaths or walk away briefly to cool down. A calmer mind is better at finding solutions.
  • 2. Listen to Understand, Not Just to Reply: Teach your student to actively listen to the other person's side without interrupting. Use "I feel..." statements (e.g., "I feel frustrated when...") instead of "You always..." statements, which sound like an attack.
  • 3. Focus on the Solution, Not the Victory: The goal is to solve the problem, not to prove who is "right." Encourage your student to brainstorm a solution that meets the needs of everyone involved (a "win-win") instead of forcing their own way.
  • 4. Know When to Walk Away or Get Help: Sometimes, conflicts cannot be resolved in the moment, or they escalate too quickly. Teach your student that it is a sign of strength to walk away from an unhealthy argument or to involve a trusted adult (parent, teacher, counselor) to mediate the discussion.
