Important Reminders

Student Safety - Once students are on campus, they are required to stay on campus unless signed out by a parent or guardian. This is to ensure that all of our Olympia students are safe and supervised at all times.

Morning Student Drop Off - Cars must follow the designated traffic pattern when dropping off students in the morning. Please pull all the way forward to the front of the auditorium. Stopping at the curve causes unnecessary backups and delays in the drop-off line. Your cooperation helps keep our car line safe and efficient for everyone.

Cell Phones & iPads/tablets & Headphones - From first to last bell, students may not use cell phones, iPads, tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, or headphones. Per OCPS policy, all devices must be silenced and stored in a backpack or purse for the entire school day, including during class changes and lunch. If a student is found using a device, they will be required to turn it in. After the first offense, progressive discipline will follow. For more information, visit www.ocps.net to view the Code of Student Conduct.

College & Career Resource Center

With application season still heavy, stress levels can be high at home. As a parent, your primary role shifts from manager to support consultant.

  • Be the Voice of Calm: Your senior often just needs to vent. Resist the urge to fix the problem or rewrite their work. Your calm, non-judgmental listening is their greatest resource. Keep perspective—reassure them that they have wonderful options waiting for them, regardless of a single acceptance letter.
  • Support, Don't Substitute: While you can help them create a Master Calendar, the responsibility for hitting the "submit" button belongs to your student. Your best role is the logistical partner: promptly providing financial documents for FAFSA and scholarships, and proofreading for typos and grammar only.
  • Limit College Talk: Avoid letting the college process dominate every family conversation. Designate a specific, 15-minute "College Check-In" time once or twice a week and commit to leaving the topic alone outside of that window.

Building Resilience - Strategies for Bouncing Back

From the Student Services Team

Resilience is not about avoiding mistakes or failure; it is the essential life skill of being able to bounce back and learn when things don't go as planned. Whether it's a disappointing test score, a setback in a sport, or a social challenge, your student's ability to cope, adapt, and keep moving is crucial for their future success.

Here are three key strategies parents can use to help their high school student build emotional resilience:

1. Normalize Setbacks with a Growth Mindset
  • Avoid telling your student, "You just need to try harder."
  • Instead, encourage a Growth Mindset by praising their effort and persistence, not just the final result.
  • The Key Question: Ask: "What did you learn from this setback that you'll do differently next time?" This shifts the focus from failure to strategy and growth.
2. Support, Don't Solve
  • When your student faces a problem, resist the urge to jump in and fix it or tell them exactly what to do.
  • Instead, help them develop their own problem-solving skills.
  • The Key Question: Ask: "What are your options right now? Which one do you want to try first?" Let them own the solution and experience the natural consequence (good or bad) of their choice.
3. Model Healthy Coping
  • Resilience starts at home; students learn by watching you.
  • Instead, Model transparency and self-compassion.
  • When you experience a minor setback, share it calmly. For example, say: "I was really frustrated when my meeting was canceled, so I took five minutes to step away and breathe, and now I'm ready to tackle the rest of the day." This teaches them healthy emotional regulation is part of the process.
